Steve Baskis speaks on “learning to be blind.”

Inspiring Annual Meeting

NEWP’s annual meeting drew more than 90 people to Legends in De Pere to hear an inspiring, mind-blowing description of a 226-mile trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon by five blind veterans told by Steve Baskis, one of the five. Baskis, who lives in Colorado, was blinded by shrapnel while serving in Iraq.

The veterans paddled their own boats, following verbal signals from a lead paddler ahead of them and a secondary and sweep paddler behind, one of whom was NEWP Vice President Ken Braband.  They encountered more than 80 rapids, up to class IV.

We were joined by about 20 members of Blind Outdoor Leisure Development (BOLD) of Milwaukee, assisted by members of the De Pere Lions Club.

Past NEWP President Jeff Mazanec was elected president again, replacing Daren Barrett, who chose not to seek re-election. Jeff Boldt and Bill Burton were elected as new board members.
