Saturday's route will change somewhat to avoid the smelly results of warm temperatures combined with the closed Menasha lock. We will launch at Shattuck Park at 9:20 a.m. and land at Lutz Park in Appleton as planned, but the planned route through Menasha has changed to avoid a channel chocked with algae and weeds. Rather than following the lock canal through downtown Menasha, paddlers will stick to the left bank and enter the Lawson Canal, land under the Racine Street bridge and portage over the former site of Gilbert Paper -- with the permission of the City of Menasha -- to a spot well downstream of the dam. The detour increases the trip slightly to 9 miles.
The portage is about a quarter-mile, but participants won’t have to carry their boats that full distance. North East Wisconsin Paddlers club trailers will haul the canoes and kayaks most of the way and volunteers from the Menasha High School soccer team will be available to carry them the rest of the way. Tips are encouraged to support the soccer program.
The granddaddy of our paddle series, Park-to-Park gives paddlers a taste of river paddling and the open water of a small piece of Lake Winnebago. The Lower Fox displays some of the area's most dramatic houses on the way to the landing at Lutz Park and birders are often rewarded with an eagle sighting.
